A Service Architecture for ATM: From Applications to Scheduling

چکیده

This paper derives a rationale for the service architecture of the ATM Forum’s Traffic Management 4.0 specification. This model distinguishes a small number of general ways to provide Quality of Service (QoS) which are appropriate for different classes of applications. We construct the set of ATM service categories by first analysing the QoS and traffic requirements for a reasonably comprehensive list of applications. The most important application properties and the complexity of the related network mechanisms are used to structure the services. This method has the desirable property that the number of service categories does not expand rapidly with the introduction of new applications. We also discuss packet scheduling as the key component for realizing such a set of services, and report on an experimental realization of a Fair Queueing scheduler.

A Novel Fuzzy Logic Base Scheduling Mechanism for Service Differentiation in IP Networks

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of rules or techniques that help the network administrators use the available network resources optimally to manage the effects of congestion and to treat the applications according to their needs. The differentiated services architecture (DiffServ) allows providing quality of service to users. The major DiffServ premise is that individual flows with sim...

1 Internet Applications over Native ATM

Current Internet applications can not take advantage of the variety of service classes offered by ATM networks. This is due to the stacking, without specific scheduling mechanisms, of a best-effort network layer on top of ATM. Simultaneously, few native ATM applications have been written specifically in this networking framework. We propose an architecture for running TCP-based applications ove...

A Corba Based Integrated Qos Support for Distributed Multimedia Applications

Advance object oriented computing platform such as the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) provides a conducive and standardized framework for the development of distributed applications. Most of the off-the-shelf CORBA are implemented over legacy network transports and distributed processing platforms such as TCP/IP and RPC. They are not suitable for real-time applications due to...

Improving traffic scheduling in wireless ATM networks

The Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol and the underlying traffic scheduling mechanism for the radio interface are critical components of a wireless ATM network, aiming to provide ATM-like quality of service (QoS) guarantees over the air. A traffic scheduling algorithm for a wireless ATM customer premises network is proposed. The algorithm operates in the mobile terminals, and complements a c...

An intelligent multi-agent architecture for dynamic regulation of ATM congestion control parameters

In this paper, we propose an intelligent multi-agent Quality of Service control architecture for the delivery and the control of MPEG-encoded applications over ATM best effort UBR+ service. The designed architecture relies on two components : an efficient video-oriented switch scheduling strategy with an adaptive discarding mechanism, and a multi-agent system based on rules and policies for glo...
